Thieves have long frustrated Los Angeles policemen Brian Gilman and Marianus von Korff. Now it's personal.
At a police department golf tournament last month, someone stole their golf equipment, worth about $2,500. "I walked into the restaurant for about 20 seconds to get Brian," von Korff says. "We walked right back out and Brian asked, 'Where are my clubs?' " Golf club thefts are likely to eclipse $200 million this year, according to Don Stafford of Insurer's World Evaluation Services. That's about 10% of the $2 billion spent annually to buy new clubs, according to Golf Datatech.
